After a double stint in the Marines, Will Jessup returns home to a summer of life changes, repairing his relationship with his mother and meeting the girl of his dreams, Kate, who is dating his nemesis, the son of the man who was involved in his father’s death. It all cumulates in a stockcar race for the “girl” and retribution for his father.
The story opens with a challenge, a car race, and the death of a young man. Twelve years later, Will Jessup, in his twenties, and Charlie, his best friend, head south to Will’s hometown in Daytona Florida in Charlie’s classic ’66 GTO. They are ready for a summer of sun, babes, and auto racing. Will reconnects with his mom, Susan Jessup, who works as a server at the local diner. Will gets a summer job and meets Kate, a beauty who moves effortlessly through her world of country clubs, fast cars, and wealthy guys. Kate and Will instantly attract to one another, and Kate’s best friend Chelsea and Charlie soon also become a couple. Unfortunately, Kate is Jason Boca’s girl, or so he thinks. Jason is a bully, a carbon copy of his dad Bryan Boca, who was in the race that cost Will’s dad his life. Though Jason frequently crosses the line with his actions, with his father’s influence, he gets away with murder. While Charlie and Chelsea enjoy a summer of fun, Will retreats to his mother’s garage to work on his dad’s old rusting ‘66 Chevelle, the beloved race car that he drove to his grave. With Charlie’s help, it becomes a labor of love. Will also starts to rebuild his relationship with his mother, while silently watching her engage in an unhealthy relationship with her friend Rick. As Will and Kate grow closer, Jason becomes jealous and challenges Will to a race. It’s déjà vu as Will shows up to race Jason in his father’s Chevelle and the Boca family look to win the race in any way possible. Just like 12 years ago.
